The hostel is 12minutes walk from the Great wall, Baidaling but 5km from Beijing. The owners are friendly!”
However, the best time to go there is in day time. We arrived in Beijing in the evening and there was no bus line to get us there. The closest the subway (metro) lines could get us to was 30km from Baidaling. You can thus imagine how much a Taxi can cost. On the positive side, we arrived in a small hostel with a very welcoming owner, super clean and nicely designed rooms, and equipped with a temperature conditioner to get the room warm (given it was quite cold in Beijin). Just make sure you get your breakfast early or book the night before. It finished quickly even though we booked for a late breakfast (9.30am). Staying at the Beijing Badaling Great Wall Cao Courtyard Hostel helped us get really quickly to the Great wall in the morning and go Back to Beijing by mid-day for other touristic activities. I strongly recommend this location to anyone going to the Badaling Great Wall in China!

Home away from home”
We had a truly amazing stay at this guesthouse. David and his parents are wonderful people who make you feel like part of the family. They go beyond the extra mile so that you have a wonderful stay. They make sure you are comfortable and that you have everything you may need. We thought it was very special to stay in a traditional Chinese "siheyuan" where David and his brother grew up and where his parents still reside. We were only 10-15 minutes walking to the entrance of the Badaling section of the Great Wall and 5 minutes from the train station. It was an unbelievable experience to stay overnight near the Great Wall, as we were able to be there early as soon as the gates open in the morning and also to see the Great Wall at night (it was lit up when we were there). There is also a fortified village near by that you can visit and that few tourists go to. David was so generous of his time to show us a bit around and spend some time over coffee with us. His parents have a small convenience store at very good prices which is very convenient for basic supplies like drinks, cakes and ramen (and cheaper than what you can purchase on the Great Wall site). Make sure you call or email in advance to let David know of your arrival time as he can pick you up at the train station. The room was very clean and comfortable. Since we were visiting in March, temperatures were still on the lower side but the AC heat function kept us warm as well as the extra blankets supplied by David's parents. Make sure that you bring extra layers of clothes if you are visiting early spring or late autumn as Badaling gets colder than Beijing. The room also has a smart tv that allows you to watch Chinese and English movies for free, which is an added bonus when you want to relax after hiking a wall for a few hours. We would definitely stay there again and consider our stay at Cao Courtyard as one of our best memories of our 3 week stay in China.

Close to the wall”
Nice place, close to the wall. the staff are friendly and speak good English. It is a small room for 3 people, but we were out and about and only needed a bed. The hosts will cook for you if you want. We ate the dumplings for breakfast and it was tasty. We had them cook dinner as well and the food is good and reasonably priced. The only draw back is this hostel in about an 1.5 hour drive from downtown Beijing. Keep in mind it will take a bit to get here. Once here this portion of the wall is amazing.

Dave and his wife are great hosts! We had some issues and they were very helpful and always nice. Communication was easy since they speak english very well. The hostel is located close to the great wall so we hadnt to walk far to get there early in the morning.

We highly recommend your place to anyone visiting the area. The accommodation was quaint, warm and comfortable. The hostel is really cosy and the location is well. You should turn right when you go out of the railway station. Then go before special place where you can cross rail lines. And there you can ask somebody about how to go to the hotel further. Because near the railroad station people don't know that place even policmen! And we also were lost but one local called to the owner and he brang us by car to the hostel. He and his family were very helpful and I wish them to have guests during the whole year! Thanks a lot!

Lovely place 10 mins walk from the wall. Was a little hard to find but we asked the locals and they pointed us in the right direction. We went in December so we were expecting it to be freezing but the room was fitted with radiators. Nicely decorated and the host speaks good English. Would stay again.

Remote village hospitality”
Not up to western standards, have to remember it’s a remote moutain village hostel. Pictures online not representative of true conditions. The bed was made of board, very hard., what the rural Chinese call a board bed, complete with pillows stuffed with straw and some fibrefill. I ended up sleeping on a square cushion on the bed. The sheets didn’t look clean, neither did the pillow cases. There is no separate show stall, so be ready to have wet everything. No toilet paper, had to bother proprietress. Noodles she made was excellent! No breakfast in the morning unless you want just coffee and dumplings, which the proprietor’s elderly father could cook. Road to hostel through village is bumpy, unpaved. Construction appears to be happening but not actively pursued. The location is close to the S2 train station. Proprietor instructions vague and unclear. He just pointed down the road, about so many meters. But coming from imperial measures, hard to judge how far. Got help when we got lost.

Très bel emplacement pour profiter de la grande muraille. L’hôtel est à 10 min à pied de la gare ( à droite en sortant de la gare) et à 20 min à pied de la grande muraille. David et son épouse sont très accueillants et sont disponibles pour les clients.
