Traveler impressions of Samosir
Samosir was a quiet getaway from the mainland of northern Sumatra. A great place to rest, relax, and recharge yourself! We enjoyed walking around the small peninsula/island, and found that a walk around the entire thing took a little over an hour.
Most of the hotel options on Samosir island are catered to hold many tourists at a time, but if you're fortunate to go during the off-season, you can find a wonderful stay that is both cheap and quiet. Make sure to take in some culture with the traditional Tor-Tor Batak dance, in Simanindo. HORAS!
The Island preserve a great history of Batak Tribe. So if you want to know more about the origin of Batak, you should come here.
Moreover, if you just want to relax, the air here is cool and clean. So if you just want to find a place for sipping your hot cup of tea, this place might be a good choice too.
Nice place to relax and suitable for those people who like to do nothing. The natural view is amazing and we climbed the mt.
pusukbuhit. The view is very nice and worth to visit. The toba fish is fresh and i love it very much. The local indonesia food big enough the portion, definitely will back again
Beautiful, peaceful and unique place. We came here 26 years ago for our honeymoon. This time, we came as a family.
We had a wonderful time in Samosir Island.
Good for those ppl who like to do sightseeing and enjoy the nature view. Be prepare for poor facilities such as toilet, ferry, roads, etc
Samosir Island is absolutely beautiful, many picturesque areas along Lake Toba itself and a lot of cultural places to visit.
It is easy and inexpensive to hire a motor bike to get around the island which is far larger than we expected.
The place is a good 4-5 hours drive from Medan, if you come directly from the airport, add another hour.
Road conditions are far from ideal with potholes aplenty. Places is good for sightseeing and water activities plus a little bit of local cultures through the tiny streets. Possibly a good place for travellers looking for an adventure and activities such ask trekking. Many hotels/resorts will put Samosir Island on their website or description but do check the actual location. To drive around Lake Toba takes about a day of driving so if you are located off where you want to be, it can easily mean a 1 to 2 hours drive to get to places. It was said that because of the volcanic soil, anything planted grows very well. So do try the local produce which are often organic and tasty.
Rent your own scooter/motorbike, this will give you great freedom to explore the island. Inquire about paved and non paved roads before you set out.
One road across the centre is extremely bad n should not be used.
Samosir Island is a quiet place steeped in the Batak culture. You can see it in the style of the houses as well as churches which dot the island, a legacy of the missionaries who came to covert the Batak people.
Samosir island is cooling and great view. Island surrounding with paddy field, flowers, hills and mountain.
Local people are friendly as well.
A quiet and peaceful place suitable for couple and honeymoon, beautiful scenery and historical site but for muslim travellers finding halal food is a big problem.
Well if there is a flight from Medan to Samosir; I might go again to Lake Toba. But otherwise I may not ever go here again.
The journey from Medan to Lake Toba. And the ferry trip from Lake Toba to Samosir Island was really a put off.
The local Bataks are Christians. They produce great woodwork but live mostly off the land and things have not changed much over time.
Best place to see this is the main market in Ganurung sp?)a US$1 becak ride from the Saulina Hotel. You will see pigs, wild boars and chickens slaughtered in the market for sale, ladies in their native garb chewing betelnuts balancing a 20 lb bag of rice on their heads bargaining with the street vendors, etc. I suggest you plan your transport to Lake Toba very carefully. Do not take the regular taxis unless you have a stomach for it.
Samosir Island is a rustic get-away with friendly people. It is a big island for about 12,500 inhabitants.
Having said that, it used to practise canabalism in the past. However, if one understand the history of this canabalism, one has nothing to worry about, as they only treat criminal like an animal and eat them. So, if we treat the local with respect, you will be treated with respect too.
