Old World Charm”
Dong Fang Hotel on Wanming Road, Beijing is one of the first hotels made by the Communist government for their official guests. Designed in imperial decor, the hotel exudes class and substance. The rooms are spacious and the facilities sufficient for a comfortable stay. Though a bit old, the hotel is well maintained and the staff courteous and helpful. It has a classy Coffee House that could remind you of a British pub. We did not sample their breakfast but the spread appeared decent enough for a foreign traveller. The location, in the Imperial Circle of Beijing, is convenient for visiting city attractions like the Tiananmen Square (visible form the hotel) and the Forbidden City. Highly recommended for the romantic traveller !

Review of Dong Fang Hotel Beijing”
Dong Fang Hotel has a very good location, within walking distance to Tian An Men square, Temple of Heaven and a number of key tourist places in down town Beijing. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. Room needs to be updated, especially the bathroom and shower areas. Hotel needs to add none smoking rooms at the "old house" section.

Good value for money to stay at Dong Fang Beijing”
We were initially quite skeptical about Dong Fang Beijing as we had read both good and bad reviews about the hotel. So, we were pleasantly surprised that we had a pleasant stay for 2 nights there. Good value for money. The service and housekeeping staff were good. Every request we asked for were attended to promptly. The room is spacious and all basic amenities were available. The location is good, takes about 20 minutes to walk to Tian An Men Sq and Gu Gong.

Great Hotel”
Overall this hotel was great value for money in an interesting neighbourhood: the winding side-streets are an attraction in and of themselves. The Health Centre did a great massage. The food in the restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced, but there are also plenty of yummy options within the vacinity. The staff were very attentive. The cleaning staff seemed to be able to sneak in when you weren't looking and tidy your room even when you didn't expect it. Would stay here again.

Exceptional”
A hotel with a long history. The room is clean and it is not expensive at all with such a great location. I like this hotel very much. Certainly will stay in this hotel again if I visit Beijing next time.

Good location. Walkiing distance to major tourist ”
Within 20-30 min. walk to Tian'annmen Sq. and the Forbidden City. Taxis are cheap and HONEST(not like other tourist vulture taxis in other cities). Chinese people are friendly and honest. Restaurant in hotel is only marginal. Plenty of 'authentic' Chinese restaurants within walking distance. Beijing is a 'safe' city. Police DO NOT tolerate any sort of crime. Familiarize yourself with the subway system(clean and efficient-only 25 cents, buses are 12 cents).

Dong Fang HOtel Beijing”
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. It was very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The Assistant Managers were always ready to make recommendations for things to do in Beijing as well as arranging transportation etc. They helped us organise our trek to the Great Wall and directed Taxi Drivers to the places we wanted to see. I will definitely recommend this place to my friends and family. It is a good place to stay for those who are on a tight budget.

not easy accessible to mrt station.. ”
the hotel is out of the city centre, about 20 minutes walk to t square. none of the taxi drivers i had knew where the hotel was - i had to show them on the map and at least 2 had to stop to ask for directions. the staff were not especially friendly or organised. the staff in the restaurant were not at all welcoming to solo travellers. for 2 nights i was sandwiched between a group of schoolgirls who spent their nights running up and down the corridor sqealing. the hotel shop is vastly overpriced - there is a grocery shop just down the road which is a lot cheaper. i'm sure there are better hotels in beijing for the same price. the quality of the rooms were ok, the bathroom was mouldy however you get what you pay for!

Dong Fang a great find”
We stayed from 30th January to 2nd February 2009 at a very good rate. I travelled with a friend who knew how to use the subway and it was an excellent experience but it's about half a kilometre away and there are buses and plenty of taxis which are cheap if you haven't got a lot of time. The breakfast is great - plenty of things that westerners will eat and best of all, lots of pretty good coffee. Not always easy to find away from the western hotel chains. Staff polite and helpful. English spoken and they were happy for us to practice our not-very-good Chinese.

Small room but clean and neat”
I was surprise that this hotel was built in 1918. Many well known historical personalities have stayed in this hotel in the past. It is located near the city center but away from the crowd and noise. Service was very good but the dining room offered only a small menu. Probably have to find other places to eat. Room was small but very neat. Had all the basics but no wi-fi. Very friendly staff.

Decent accomadations. Location was good not Great.”
hotel staff was nice but there but there was a problem with a tour we set up going to the summber palace. the tour guide met me early in the morning and found out only my wife and i were going on this tour. the guide told me to wait in the lobby. she took off and never came back. the tour company left a message saying something came up and they cancelled the tour. we ended up roughing it going on our own which was very, very difficult. business practice in beijing is like the tide. they change their mind like the wind. you need to know someone or it has to be with a big group where they know they will make money.

Historical & cultural scenic spots”
Good value for money. The staff are helpful & friendly. Single room is clean & bright although the bathroom only provides basic facilities - shower & plastic curtain. Installation of a handrail on the wall near the shower is needed so as to prevent falling accidentally when taking a shower.

Rooms were fine, buta bit noisy”
Wish we had known about the old part of the hotel as we would have preferred a room in this part. The website should indicate the different rooms. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.

Great location but bad food and lousy surroundings”
Hotel has an old world charm but small and over utilized elevators. Food is mediocre so is the lobby area, though well decorated but small and always congested. Hotel is very stingy about cashing your American Express traveler's cheque because they compare your signature minutely. Hotel can use some better English speaking staff. Because of the horrendous traffic in Beijing hotel has great location to reach Tiane, man Square and Forbidden City.

Quiet, Good location and convenient.”
Hotel staff are friendly but hardly get any further information about the travel tips. Room condition is clean and neat. Room is facing housing area shop lot so is pretty quiet. Morning sunlight and shade of trees are another bonus for me. Overall am given 3.5 stars out of 5.
