Stayed Extra Night as So Good”
We had booked for one night - and as soon as we arrived and sat on the terrace watching the dramatic sky prepare for sunset over the stunning views of the hills and river, we immediately decided to stay an extra night. That was such a great idea as the Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge is such a comfortable and relaxing and well run hotel in a remarkable setting. A tip to travellers: Book your journey by slow boat in two parts, so you can stay a few days at the Sanctuary. Another highlight: You MUST visit the Sanctuary-run Mekong Elephant Park - on the opposite bank of the river. Here we walked with 3 gentle elephants and their mahouts & the wonderful park manager, Wendy, slowly through the forrest whilst they munched bamboo and we learnt interesting facts and stories about Lao elephants. This was a highlight of our trip in Laos as one of the few places in the world where one can see that the elephants are so well looked after and cared for and walk with the elephants untethered. If I could give 100 stars, it still wouldn’t be enough! The sanctuary is a beautiful place overlooking the Mekong River and an elephant park where they come out to bathe every morning at 7 am. The suite rooms are clean, spacious and comfy with beautiful views, especially the sunsets. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was so delicious! We will miss this place!

Amazing breakfast, watching the elephants in the river”
The room was great, clean and the bed was comfortable. The pool was nice to cool off in at the end of the day. The grounds are well done with beautiful gardens. It's a short walk into town for dinner. Breakfast topped off the stay. It was amazing watching the elephants play in the river while we ate breakfast.

A great view of elephants playing & bathing across the river, while we were at breakfast. Clean rooms, lodge feel. Nice pool. Nice walk to town.

A relaxing place to stay in a great location ”
Loved the setting, beautiful room with fantastic view. The communal areas are delightful and the pool was a bonus. We were a bit disappointed with the breakfast - poor choice for a hotel of this quality and not a patch on its sister hotel in Luang Prabang. I’d add that the bed wasn’t very firm , could do with replacing the mattress Despite these reservations it was a great place to stay.

Perfect stay for a night or two”
Breakfast is a la carte, good variety. We had a room on the second floor with wonderful view from the balcony to the Mekong. Rooms of the standard category don’t have air con and television. Both you don’t need at this wonderful spot.

Beautiful view at breakfast ”
This was an excellent place with a great view of the river. My only suggestion would be to lower the restaurant and massage prices. The reason that people are not using these services is that it’s so much less expensive in the village.

Very beautiful hotel from outside with amazing views on the Mekong river but the bathroom should be renewed. It is very very old, the shower head was broken and there was a hole in the wall. The room should be also improved. Breakfast only aceptable.

In Pakbeng there isn't much choice in the upper end quality of accommodation. I had come in off the slow boat and was staying just one night (I suspect most people are doing this). I'm not into staying at hostels these days and so choices were limited. The Sanctuary I noted provided a complimentary tuk tuk pick up from the pier and so this was of value to me (travelling with a suitcase and a rucksack). Situated in a lovely spot overlooking the Mekong, the sunset view was impressive from the bar/dining area, and it was nice seeing elephants bathe opposite. My room was spacious (I'd been upgraded to a deluxe - not sure exactly what difference this made) but there were some elements that could be improved...picky things (no milk sachets, withered flowers on pillows, bifold doors too stiff and heavy, and lack of privacy on the balcony). Breakfast was literally a surprise as bits came out randomly; a menu card showing the set breakfast would allow guests to know what was offered.

Rooms need renovation”
Staff is kind and helpful, facilities are nice as well as the location but the rooms need definitely renovation. Our mattress were worn out and the bathroom seem to be from the 80s. Rooms are smaller as they seem on the pictures. Price for the room is therefore not appropriate especially not for Laos.

A wonderful location and tremendous staff. We decided to have their fixed price menu in the evening. It was delicious - such a well balanced meal - enough for four - we ate for three (despite being only two of us) and there was still loads left. We had to leave early but they organised a take away breakfast for us. Oh - and we had the most delicious French wine, kept at the right temperature and very reasonably priced. Well worth the visit.

The hotel arrange collection from the pier for us. We hadn’t booked with the tour company so were able to order from the a la carte menu. Staff were all pleasant. I heard that the pool is a long walk from the hotel. Excellent rooms, very well appointed although the walls between are a little thin.

Stunning vista over the Mekong and beyond”
En route to Luang Prabang, a 1 night stop over, picked up from pier and check in very smooth, our room, 208, offered a stunning view, unfortunately to late for sunset. Very comfortable bed. Great omelette for breakfast and a courtesy drop back to the boat.

This is a beautiful hotel, but if you’re coming off the boat, you really won’t have time to fully enjoy it in 1 short evening. The staff is very kind and helpful, but very reduced due to few visitors as the country continues to recover from COVID. Recommend you schedule boat(s) to stay two days/nights minimum.
