“Incredibly Special”
If you're reading this review congratulations for stumbling upon the best homestay in all of Taiwan. A perennial favorite of every Lonely Planet iteration going back two decades, it is immediately apparent why Wisdom Garden is held in such high esteem. Tucked back in the foothills outside of Yuli, the grounds are straight out of a fairy tale with views extending east across the Huadong Valley to the mountains of the Coastal Range and a tributary of the Xiuguluan River meandering through the property. Upon arrival I was greeted by Vicky who let me know that her mom, Mei, had upgraded me to a room with an en suite in the Zen Building adjacent to the main house. A great deal of thought and a keen eye for design went into every detail of the guest quarters. Clean and comfortable with abundant natural light spilling in from the forest outside, Zen is an apt name for the space. My room felt like a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Every morning I was treated to a delicious and nutritious breakfast with generous portions and ample coffee. It was over a couple of cups that I quickly made friends with a fellow guest who, like me, was keen to explore the surrounding area. But for much of our stay Mother Nature had other ideas and so we resigned ourselves to the in-house entertainment: Vicki's pet duck, Baozi. Every few minutes during breakfast Baozi would scurry into the solarium to admire his reflection in the glass door of a refrigerator. This never seemed to get old for him and the same could be said for us as spectators. If ever there was a place where you would want your plans to get rained out, Wisdom Garden is it. There are just so many wonderful things to say about this place and the family who make it so unforgettable. From Mei's art that adorns the walls of the Zen Building and the main house, to the impromptu midweek dinner where we all dined together, it's the many talents and generosity of Vicky and her mom that made my stay in Yuli so incredibly special. It's exceedingly rare that any place lives up to such a lofty reputation, but at Wisdom Garden they not only meet but exceed it. Looking forward to a return visit already!
